Abstract

This collection houses a four piece panoramic photograph of Knoxville, Tennessee taken by T. M. Schleier in 1865 and John S. Van Gilder's 1936 manuscript identifying each of the objects shown.

Biographical/Historical Note

Theodore M. Schleier was born on April 20, 1832 in Prussia. He married Caroline E. Knaffl on April 5, 1862, and the couple had one daughter, Matilda W. Schleier was a professional photographer and worked in a number of locations in the southeastern United States, including Nashville (from about 1859 to 1869) and Knoxville (from about 1870 to 1890). He and his family eventually settled in New York City, where Schleier died on December 13, 1908.

John Somers Van Gilder was born on February 7, 1892 in Tennessee and died in June of 1971 in Knoxville, Tennessee.
