Abstract

This collection contains the manuscript of Richard David Present's book, Kinetic Theory of Gases, reprints of journal articles by Present and other physicists, and class notes from Physics classes taught by Present at the University of Tennessee.

Biographical/Historical Note

Richard David Present was a distinguished Professor of Physics at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville from 1969 to 1983. Present received his PhD from Harvard University in 1935. He was an instructor in physics at Purdue University from 1935 to 1940 and a physicist at Columbia University Division of War Research, Manhattan Project, 1943-1946. He served as a consultant to the Clinton National Laboratory (which later became Oak Ridge National Laboratory) from 1946-1948. He was selected as a fellow for the Institute of International Education in Paris from 1937-1938. Present died in 1983.

Present published over forty articles and one book, Kinetic Theory of Gases. His research concerned molecular quantum theory, nuclear theory, kinetic theory of gases, intermolecular forces, and liquid state.

Acquisition Note

Mrs. Thelma Present donated these papers to the University of Tennessee's Special Collections Library in September of 1988.
