The Don Whitehead Journalistic Collection houses manuscripts, scrapbooks, correspondence, photos, newspaper columns, and personal memorabilia documenting Whitehead's 40-year journalistic career.

Biographical/Historical Note

Don Whitehead was born on April 8, 1908, in Inman, Virginia. He was raised in Kentucky and attended the University of Kentucky. He started his journalistic career in 1928 working for newspapers in La Follette and Harlan, Kentucky. His career with the Associated Press started in 1935. Whitehead earned much respect as a journalist while covering the Second World War and Korean War for the Associated Press. Following his war experiences, Whitehead wrote several books, including the bestseller The FBI Story (1956), and also worked for the New York Herald Tribune. In the latter years of his career, he continued writing books and was a regular columnist for the Knoxville News-Sentinel. Whitehead was married for over 50 years to his wife, Marie Patterson, and together they had one daughter, Ruth. He wrote actively until shortly before his death on January 12, 1981 at age 72.
