This collection contains images (primarily postcard views) of 135 Tennessee cities. It is particularly rich in images of Knoxville, documenting the city and its history through pictures of airports, individual buildings, maps, vistas, people, vehicles, the Tennessee River, street scenes, and the 1982 World's Fair.

It is particularly rich in images of Knoxville, documenting the city and its history through pictures of airports, individual buildings, maps, vistas, people, vehicles, the Tennessee River, street scenes, and the 1982 World's Fair.

Biographical/Historical Note

First settled in 1786 by James White, the city of Knoxville was officially founded in 1791 and was named the capital of the Southwest Territory and then the first capital of the state of Tennessee in 1796. Knoxville has remained one of the three largest cities in Tennessee and is known for hosting the 1982 World's Fair.

Arrangement

Collection consists of two boxes divided into three series:

  1. Series I: Photographs of Tennessee Cities (excluding Knoxville), circa 1880-1991 (bulk 1905-1950)
  2. Series II: Photographs of Knoxville, circa 1850-2007 (bulk 1886-circa 1960)
  3. Series III: Photographs of Chattanooga, circa 1865-1900
