Before you begin...
This workbook requires the use of popup windows. Please turn off your popup blocker now.
Save your data on each page...
Each page has one button at the bottom of the form.
  • Save Data and View MODS TAGS
    When you are done entering data, you must click this button to save the data you have entered.
    You will be presented with a display of the MODS tags that have been built for this page.
  • <header>
    All fields on the <header> Page are required and you will not be allowed to save the page until these are completed.
    <titleInfo>
    The Non Sort field is for words in the title that are to be ignored in searches, such as the or a.
    The Title field is required. This field has a yellow background.
    Sub Title, Part Number, and Part Name are not required but recommended when applicable.
    <name>
    When you first bring up this page, you will see one Name Block. The personal lastname OR corporate/conference name field is required. This field has a yellow background.
    You may add as many Name Blocks as needed, as long as you fill in the field with the yellow background.
    <typeOfResource>
    The typeOfResource field is required. Select up to 3 values from the popup menu.
    <genre>
    The genre field is recommended. If this field is used, the DLF Aquifer Guidelines require the use of a value from a controlled list.
    The workbook supplies a popup menu for MARC genre terms, a link to aat online genre terms, and a reference for chenhall genre terms.
    <originInfo>
    One Date of Creation field is required. You may use
    either Single Date of Creation or Creation Date Range to satisfy the requirement.
    Dates are entered from a popup date selector menu.
    Other fields are not required but are recommended.
    <language>
    Language is required, if necessary to understanding the resource. A popup box for selection of Language is provided.
    After selection, you must save the data in order to build the MODS tags.
    <physicalDescription>
    On this page, Digital Origin and Internet Media Type are required and highlighted with yellow.
    For other fields, enter as much information as you have.
    <abstract>
    The abstract field is not required. If you fill nothing in and save the page, no mods:abstract tag is made.
    <subject>
    This page allows you to add one or more subject blocks.
    At least one subject element is required.
    Click the Add one Subject Block button to generate an input form for a new subject block.
    Click the Removed one Subject Block button to remove the last input form for a subject block.
    Having at least one subelement inside each subject block is required.
    These fields are all populated by clicking buttons and selecting from popup windows.
    The subject authority attribute must be selected before selecting any subelements.
    The subelements listed on page 53 of the DLF Aquifer Guidelines are:
  • topic
  • geographic
  • temporal
  • titleInfo
  • name (personal, corporate, conference)
  • genre
  • hierarchicalGeographic
  • cartographics
  • geographicCode
  • occupation
    Please consult the DLF Aquifer Guidelines for further instructions on subject tags.
  • <relatedItem>
    The only type of Related Item supported by the workbook is a link to the Related Item's metadata record.
    The relatedItem element is recommended but not required.
    This page allows you to add one or more related item blocks.
    To build the tags for a related item, you must enter a valid url for the item.
    The attributes for Display Label and for Type are optional.
    The Type is from a controlled vocabulary in a drop down menu.
    Click the Add one Related Item button to generate an input form for a new related item block.
    Click the Remove one Related Item button to remove the last input form for a related item block.
    <identifier>
    The identifier element is recommended but not required.
    This page allows you to add one or more identifier blocks.
    The identifier value and type attribute are required for an identifier block.
    The type is from a controlled vocabulary in a drop down menu.
    To build the tags for an identifier, you must enter a valid identifier for the selected type.
    The attribute for Display Label is optional.
    The attribute for invalid has a default value of no and is only added to the tag when invalid="yes".
    Click the Add one Identifier button to generate an input form for a new identifier block.
    Click the Remove one Identifier button to remove the last input form for a identifier block.
    <location>
    The only type of location subelement supported by the workbook is url.
    One location element is required with the subelement url and the attribute usage="primary display".
    The workbook provides input boxes to correctly build the required subelement.
    The workbook allows addition of up to 3 other url subelements, but per DLF Aquifer Guidelines,
    none of these has the usage="primary display" attribute.
    It is recommended that all URLs used with the location element be persistsent.
    <accessCondition>
    The accessCondition element is required with the type attribute.
    The workbook provides an example of an accessCondition web page ( localRights.htm ),
    but this is only an example.
    It is your responsibility to discover the rules about your local resources
    and to write your own localRights.htm webpage.
    <recordInfo>
    The recordInfo element is required with the languageOfCataloging subelement.
    The recordContentSource is not required but recommended.
    Review Page
    This is where you may review your work.
    A visit to the Review Page displays all the values you have entered, but changes nothing.
    Required fields are highlighted with a yellow background.
    You may visit this page as often as you like.
    This page is helpful when you are reloading an xml file that was created by somebody else.
    Final Page
    The purpose of the final page is to View or Download your xml file.
    The display contains validation status by page (complete/incomplete).
    If any page is incomplete, you will have to create an incomplete xml file.
    This file can be saved and then copied to the Reload page for continuation of work at a later date.
    If all pages are in status complete, you may create the final xml file.
    There are 3 buttons on this page.
  • View MODS TAGS -- A quick way to preview the file.
  • Create Incomplete XML File -- Save the work you have done so far, complete later.
  • Create FINAL XML File with valildation -- Final work, validation will catch any incomplete pages.
  • Display XML as HTML and use View Source on the frame to retrieve the XML file -- like View MODS TAGS in that the xml is loaded into the display frame. In this case, the XML is viewed as HTML. Right click on the frame and select View Source to retrieve the download file of XML tags and data.
  • Reload Page
    This page allows reload of an xml file created by the workbook.
    Step 1: Open the file with notepad or other text editor.
    Step 2: Cut and paste the entire xml file into the textarea on the reload page.
    Step 3: Press the Process Data in TextArea button.
    Step 4: Revisit each page in the workbook to enter your revisions. (Remember to save your data!)
    Step 5: When revisions are complete, go to the Final page and download a new xml file.
