This collection features multiple training manuals, dated during the 1940s, used by William E. Austin and fellow soldiers while training for World War II. These manuals include basic training as well as technical and engineering instructions. The collection is arranged by manual subject.

Series I: Basic Field Manuals includes drill regulations, photograph readings, an engineering how-to, first aid instructions, and interior guard duty outlines.

Series II: War Department Technical Manuals contains manuals titled as Techincal Manuals, which include radio information, aircraft maintenance, and machine workings among others.

Series III: War Department Engineering Manuals include manuals titles as Engineering Manuals, containing reference data and camouflage techniques.

Series IV: War Department Various Manuals contains other War Department manuals, including watermanship, map and aerial photgraphs, sanitation procedures, and defense against chemical warfare.

Series V: Other Manuals contains manualsnot expressly related to the War Department, including radio repairs, a copy of Army Life, and a USAFI Information Bulletin.
