Raulston Family Papers
The collection consists of several Marion County, Tennessee land surveys for the Raulston, Anderson, and State families.
The Raulston Family Documents contain documents that list the dates of birth, death, and marriages of the Raulston family. Also included is the Civil War discharge paper belonging to the 28-year-old Union private William D. Raulston. Raulston was discharged from military duty on June 25, 1865. The document describes his physical description and the county in which he was born (Marion County, TN). William Raulston participated in the Union 5th Regiment of Tennessee Calvary Volunteers and served three years after leaving his native Marion County, TN. His company was under the charge of Captain Reuben C. Couch. They led and joined skirmishes and battles form Tennessee to the Carolinas.
The William and Samuel Anderson land surveys contain land survey documents issued by the State of Tennessee and Marion County, the county in which the land was owned. Each land survey conveyed the physical characteristics of the land in Mountain District that are often found in metes and bounds land surveys. The land acquired by these two Andersons totaled 156 acres of land. Samuel Anderson acquired 64 acres, and William Anderson acquired 92 acres.
David State acquired 300 acres of land in Marion County, Tennessee on the east side of the Fiery Gizzard in the Mountain District.

The collection consists of several Marion County, Tennessee land surveys for the Raulston, Anderson, and State families. There is one document listing the birth and death dates for the Raulston family, and there is also a military discharge document for William Raulston.
Biographical/Historical Note
The Raulston family were farmers in Marion County, TN, having owned land near the Fiery Gizzard trail and the Cumberland Mountain in the now South Cumberland State Park. The land identified from the surveys is from a particular district, the Mountain District. This district in Marion County is named after the Cumberland Mountain that traverses the land. All of the land surveys from the Raulston, Anderson, and State families identified the land by using the natural landscape and measurements. Land surveys originating from the early settlement of Tennessee used the metes and bounds system to locate and survey the land that the family or government claimed. The metes and bounds system uses natural characteristics such as a body of water, trees, mountains, and other such natural landmarks to identify the land owned. The metes and bounds system applies to early settlement states before the existence of the Public Land Survey System developed by the federal government. Each survey was signed and sealed with the Tennessee seal, signifying the approval of the state and county of the ownership of the described land.
