Abstract

The Ellis Mayes Theatre Collection contains memorabilia and personal effects of Ellis Mayes, an actor with Knoxville's Carousel Theatre for several decades. Included are photographs, playbills, scripts, and personal mementos belonging to Mayes. Materials date from the 1940s to the 1990s.

Biographical/Historical Note

Ellis Ephraim Mayes was born in Rutledge, Tennessee on April 4,1918, to Joseph and Nannie Elizabeth Mayes. He graduated from Knoxville High School in 1937 where he engaged in extracurricular activities including acting. Following military service, where he acheived the rank of Major, Mayes returned to Knoxville. He was very active in the Carousel Theatre, helping bring many of its stagings to life. Mayes died March 4, 1999, and requested his body be donated to science.

This collection is divided into three boxes and arranged by material type and chronological order.

This collection is the property of Special Collections.

A scrapbook was dismantled and divided into separate folders for space purposes.
