The material in this collection was collected by Ellen McClung Green concerning the families of Frank H. McClung and John W. Green. The material covers the time period starting around 1840 and ends with the death of John Green in 1957.

Abstract

This collection contains genealogical information, obituaries, correspondence, newspaper articles, diaries, legal papers, and ephemera concerning the family of Frank H. McClung (1828-1898), his children, and John W. (1859-1957) and Ellen McClung Green (1872-1956).

Biographical/Historical Note

The McClung family played a significant role in the founding of Knoxville and continued to be prominent members of the Knoxville community and surrounding area since Colonel Charles McClung (1761-1835) immigrated to Knoxville in 1788. He and his wife Margaret White McClung (1771-1827) had nine children. His eldest son was Matthew McClung (1795-1844) was married to Eliza Jane Morgan.

Frank H. McClung (1828-1898) was the son of Matthew and Eliza McClung. Frank McClung and his wife Eliza Ann Mills (1833-1881) had 10 children, seven of whom lived until adulthood. Calvin M. McClung (1855-1919) was a prominent businessman who owned C.M. McClung and Co., a wholesale hardware company along with his brother Charles McClung. G. McClung (1868-1928) was a lawyer in Boston, and Thomas Lee McClung (1870-1914) was a football player at Yale from 1888-1891 and later the Treasurer of the United States.

Ellen Marshall McClung was born on May 23, 1872 to Franklin Henry (1828-1898) and Eliza Ann Mills (1833-1881) McClung. She married John Green on January 26, 1897. With her husband, she traveled around the world and maintained an estate on Black Oak Ridge. She died in May of 1956.

John Webb Green was born to Francis Marion and Susan (Webb) Green on June 9, 1859 in Oxford, Mississippi. He graduated from the Webb School in Bellbuckle, Tennessee, and proceeded to read law under Major T. S. Webb. He was licensed to practice on September 29, 1880 and opened his own practice in Knoxville, Tennessee. In addition, Green served on the Supreme Court in 1902 and 1935 and on the Court of Appeals in 1916. He also served as Chairman of Education, Trustee of the Eastern State Hospital, Chairman of the Committee on Admission to Practice in the Federal Courts of Knoxville, and Trustee of the Lawson-McGhee Library. He died on May 26, 1957.

Thomas Lee McClung was born on March 26, 1870, in Knoxville, Tennessee. He graduated from Yale in 1892 and was appointed U.S. Treasurer in 1909. He died of typhoid fever in London on December 19, 1914.
