This collection contains a letter from George Andrews in Liverpool, England, written to Hugh L. McClung in Knoxville, Tennessee. The letter discusses the sale and the cost of several acres of land, previously owned by a Mr. Scott, in Knoxville; Andrews is hoping to sell all of the land but is concerned about the prices being offered by various prospective buyers. The letter also includes a list of people who have already purchased some of Scott's land as well as a bulletin circulated in England announcing Andrews' sale of the land. It closes with a postscript requesting information of a plot of land to be sold in Georgia. The letter is dated June 1, 1849. The collection also includes a handwritten transcript of the letter.

Biographical/Historical Note

Hugh Lawson McClung was born May 26, 1810 to Charles and Margaret White McClung. He was first married to Rachel Morgan (1810-1842). He was later married to Annie Gillespie (1825-1875). He died April 11, 1891, and is buried in Old Gray Cemetery in Knoxville. His grandfather James White was the founder of Knoxville.
