Biographical/Historical Note

Wallace Woodruff Baumann was born to Albert B. and Lucy (Woodruff) Baumann in Knoxville, Tennessee on April 19, 1925. He graduated from the Darlington School and went on to serve with Combat Command B of the 10th Armored Division during World War II. After being discharged from the Army, Baumann attended the University of Tennessee (where he was a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity) before joining the family business at W. W. Woodruff Hardware and Furniture Company on Gay Street. Baumann's great-grandfather, Captain W. W. Woodruff, founded the enterprise in 1865.

Baumann was a supporter of several civic organizations, including the Knoxville Chamber of Commerce, the Knox County Chapter of Red Cross, the Knoxville Rotary Club, the Downtown Knoxville Association, and the Knoxville Tourist Bureau. At the time of his death, he was serving as a historian on the Historic Tennessee Theatre Foundation Board and as a member of the U.T. Library Friends Executive Committee. Baumann was also an avid supporter of the historic Tennessee Theater, directing much of its restoration and personally financing the complete restoration of the theater's original Wurlitzer organ. Baumann died on August 11, 2009 in Knoxville.
