Biographical/Historical Note
The Tennessee General Assembly officially formed the Carthage Female Academy on February 5, 1842 with John J. Burnett, Leroy E. Mitchell, Adam Ferguson, Wiatt W. Bailey, William Robertson, and Martin W. Sloane as the institution's trustees. It became a branch of the Geneva Academy in February of 1856 so that it could take advantage of Smith County's public education fund but continued under its own name and retained its own Board of Trustees. The two institutions sold their main buildings in order to buy new land in the 1880s and 1890s, and the Female Academy was opened to men at approximately the same time. Although no further information was located, the Academy seems to have prospered well into the 20th century.
