George E. Webb Thesis
George E. Webb wrote this thesis while completing his Master of Church Music degree at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. In it, he examines William Caldwell's Union Harmony hymn book, which was originally published in 1837. Webb aims to answer six questions: (1) What was the purpose of this collection? (2) What were Caldwell's sources? (3) What about the forty-three tunes he claimed to have written or harmonized? Are they really his? (4) What is the general theme of his texts? (5) What later compilers looked to Union Harmony for material? (6) What is Caldwell's legacy to modern hymnals?

Biographical/Historical Note
George Eliga Webb was born to George Eliga and Elizabeth (Addington) Webb on November 21, 1945. He earned his BS Degree from Tennessee Technological University in 1967 and his MA in Church Music at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1975. Webb married Charlotte Dawn Richardson on August 4, 1973. He went on to write two books: Early printing in Rogersville, Tennessee (1978) and Tennessee hymnals and tune books, 1813-1865: a bibliographical checklist (1994).
