Much of the information shows Anna Chandler, one of the Circle's earliest members.
Biographical/Historical Note
Cornelia E. (Peed) Ross and Helen (Clark) Peed founded the Athene Circle on March 1, 1897 for mutual help and encouragement of its members in intellectual development. The circle studied such subjects as Tennessee history and the countries of Spain, France, Russia, the United States, Italy, England, Germany, Ireland, and Greece.
Anna Simonson Chandler was born to David Henry and Ruth Almira (Felt) Chandler in Etna, Indiana on September 16, 1866. She was one of nine children, including Martha Janet, Asenath Maria, Charles Wheeler, Mary Wheeler, George Prentiss, Laura Emily, William Henry, and Virgil Seth. Anna and Virgil Chandler moved to Knoxville, Tennessee where he operated a business and she was active in literary and intellectual circles. Anna Chandler died in Knoxville on June 26, 1930.
