This collection houses three poems by Milford E. Shields entitled 'The Declaration of Independence,' 'The Constitution,' and 'The Flag.' Together, they form Shields' "American Triad."
Biographical/Historical Note
Milford E. Shields was born to Fernando Wiet and Louisa Ellen (Jones) Shields in Kellogg, Iowa on October 29, 1898. He married Nellie Naomi Myers (1899-1978) on November 25, 1920, and the couple had at least one son, Chester Arthur. Shields farmed in Olathe, Colorado from 1917 to 1925 and went on to work as a projectionist in Durango's Kiva Theater. He was named Colorado's Poet Laureate and published several books of poetry, including Colorado (1943), Dirty Face (1944), Burning Weeds (1945), Engine 315 (1958), and Patterns for Patriotism (1958) in addition to one prose work, Static Land (1948). Shields died in February of 1979 in Durango, Colorado.
