Abstract

This collection houses lists of winners, programs, speeches, press releases, questionnaires, contest rules, committee reports, and correspondence documenting Tennessee Press Association contests held between 1970 and 1982.

Biographical/Historical Note

With an office located at the Knoxville campus, the Tennessee Press Association was organized in 1941 to unite the newspapers of Tennessee into a voluntary non-profit educational association to promote the welfare of the newspaper industry. UT and TPA sponsored an annual Tennessee State Press Contest. These contests were open to daily, weekly, and semi-weekly newspapers in Tennessee and made awards in the following categories: make-up and appearance, local features, best single features, women’s news, sports writing, Sunday editions, editorials, best single editorials, public service, greatest improvement, best picture story, best special edition, use of color, advertising campaign, and best single advertisement.
