Abstract

This collection houses a wealth of material illustrating the lives of J. K. Womack and his family in Rutherford County, Tennessee during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Among the items included are land deeds, indentures, genealogical information, material documenting the Baptist Church, broadsides, and correspondence and other information describing Joseph A. Johnson's application for a pension.

Biographical/Historical Note

John Knox Womack was born to James Smith (1818-1895) and Dorcas Hill (1821-1857) Womack on April 14, 1844. He was the second of seven children, including Malvina (1840-1857), America Ann (1848-1908), William M. (1851-1852), Josephine C. (1853-1887), James Richard (1854-1924), and Alexandria Pendleton (1856-). During the Civil War, John Womack served with Company D of the Confederate 8th Tennessee Cavalry. After the war, he returned to his family in Tennessee. Here, he was ordained as a Minister of the Gospel in the Round Lick (Baptist) Presbytery in approximately 1869. Womack married Mary Jane Scales (1841-1872) in Rutherford County, Tennessee on March 31, 1872. After her death, he married her sister, Charlotte Gallihugh Scales, on April 4, 1873. His six children with his second wife were Absalom Scales, Selma Cecilia, Horace Cantrell, Leila Scales, Mary Beattie, and Nancy Dalton Scales. John Womack died on April 4, 1922 and is buried on the family grounds in Eagleville, Tennessee.
