This collection consists of twelve 2 x 3 in. and twenty 1.5 x 2 in. black and white photographs of a number of sites taken in the 1930s by Walter M. Cline.

The 2 x 3 in. photographs depict such subjects as an 18th century grist mill, Norris Dam, Fontana Dam in North Carolina, Cherokee Dam near Jefferson City, Pickwick Dam, Fort Loudon Dam near Lenoir City, Chickamauga Dam near Chattanooga, Douglass Dam, Watts Bar Dam near Spring City, and Wilson Dam in Alabama.

The 1.5 x 2 in. photographs include images of Newfound Gap Highway, Clingman's Dome, Mount Leconte, Laurel Falls, Rainbow Falls, Alum Cave Bluff, the Little Pigeon River, the Sawteeth, and black bears.

Abstract

This collection houses a number of photographs that Walter M. Cline took in the 1930s of southeastern parks, roads, scenery, and TVA dams.

Biographical/Historical Note

Walter Matson Cline was born in Ohio to Isaac and Sarah Ann (Matson) Cline on April 21, 1873. He moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee in 1904, where he started his photography studio and postcard business. He married Lucy Haley (1878-1964) in Chattanooga on January 15, 1914, and the couple had two known children, Walter Matson Jr. and Sarah Antoinette. Cline died on April 12, 1941 in Chattanooga.
