This collection contains the Soldier's Prayer Book, published at Philadelphia in 1861, of William F. Hill. There are also two business cards, one belonged to Hill of Apponaug, Rhode Island, and the other to Lt. Gideon Spencer of the First Regiment, Rhode Island Light Artillery.

Abstract

This collection contains the Soldier's Prayer Book, published in Philadelphia 1861, of William F. Hill. There are also two business cards, one belonged to Hill of Apponaug, Rhode Island, and the other to Lt. Gideon Spencer of the First Regiment, Rhode Island Light Artillery.

Biographical/Historical Note

William Fones Hill was born in Apponaug, Rhode Island, on May 1, 1843, to Caleb Robinson and Mary Warner (Harrison) Hill. On September 17, 1867, he married Annie Josephine Spencer, daughter of Peleg and Marcena (Gorton) Spencer of Apponaug. They had one child, Mary Elizabeth, in about 1868. William died on January 12, 1875. He may be the First Lt. William Hill of the 7th Regiment, Rhode Island Infantry, which organized at Providence, R. I., in 1862.

Gideon Spencer was born in Warwick, Rhode Island, on April 2, 1844, to Thomas and Tabitha Spencer, and educated at Providence College in Providence, R.I. At age 17, he enlisted into Battery D of the First Regiment, Rhode Island Light Artillery, and was mustered into service on September 4, 1861. By December 1863, he was promoted to Sergeant. He reenlisted at Knoxville, Tenn., on January 31, 1864. On August 25, 1864, he was captured at Reams Station, Weldon Railroad, Va. and then paroled February 22, 1865. By May that year he was promoted to First Lieutenant of Battery F, and then mustered out on July 7, 1865. He took part in 30 battles, but was never wounded.
