This collection contains the research materials and articles of Alberta and Carson Brewer. The first series, Valley So Wild: A Folk History Notebooks, 1960s-2001, contains the drafts, interviews, and research materials of the Brewers for their book. (The papers were removed from the binders and put into non-acidic folders in the original order.) The second series, Newspaper Articles, 1995-2004, contains articles by Carson Brewer from the Knoxville News-Sentinel, as well as articles mentioning or about Carson by Sam Venable and by others, including his obituary.

Abstract

This collection contains the research materials and drafts for Valley So Wild: A Folk History by Alberta and Carson Brewer and articles/columns for Knoxville News-Sentinel by or about Carson Brewer.

Biographical/Historical Note

Carson Brewer (1920-2003) attended Maryville College and the University of Tennessee and served during World War II. In 1945, he joined the Knoxville News-Sentinel staff, covering federal beat, city hall, and the courthouse. In 1949, he married journalist Alberta Trulock, who bore his son Carson T. Kit Brewer, Jr. He began in the 1950s a weekly column, which expanded to three columns per week. Through this column, he supported local folklore and the region's natural resources. He wrote several books on the Smokies and Tennessee, including Valley So Wild: A Folk History with Alberta, and won several awards for his journalism and conservationism. He retired in 1985 but continued to write for the paper.

Alberta Trulock Brewer was the original manager of the United Press bureau in Knoxville in 1948. She was also a bureau writer and manager in Jacksonville and Nashville.
