Biographical/Historical Note
Joseph Anderson was born in Philadelphia on November 5, 1757. He fought in the Revolutionary War, studied and practiced law, and served as a United States Senator from 1797-1815. As territorial judge of the area south of the Ohio river, he participated in the drafting of Tennessee's constitution. In 1815 he was named comptroller of the United States Treasury and served in that capacity until 1836. He died on April 17, 1837.
