Abstract

This collection contains photographs documenting the construction of Norris Dam, the first dam built by TVA, between 1933 and 1936.

Biographical/Historical Note

Construction on the Norris Dam began in 1933, the same year that President Franklin D. Roosevelt authorized the creation of the Tennessee Valley Authority. The dam was the first constructed by the TVA and was completed in 1936. It is named for Senator George Norris of Nebraska, the author of the legislation that created TVA. Today the area surround the dam is a popular recreation area.
