Abstract

T. J. Walker's handwritten, 98-page manuscript chronicles the time he spent with the 9th Tennessee Infantry between approximately 1861 and 1865. During his service, Walker was wounded five times and contracted dysentery and typhoid at Corinth, Mississippi.

Biographical/Historical Note

Thomas J. Walker was born in approximately 1844 in Tennessee. His service in the Civil War began in 1861 when he left school in Haywood County, Tennessee at the age of 17 to join a unit he calls Capt. Woods' Tipton Co. Confederates. Shortly after he joined, this and several other units were combined to form the Confederate 9th Tennessee Infantry. The unit fought at Shiloh and Perryville before taking part in the Murfreesboro and Atlanta campaigns. They were then assigned to General Hood's winter operations and finally stationed in North Carolina. On April 26, 1865 the unit surrendered 40 soldiers, reduced from its original 838.

After the war, Walker married a woman named Betty in approximately 1868. They had one son, Clarence. Walker died on August 30, 1920.
