Writing to his Dear Sister Kate on December 3, 1863, James, a Confederate soldier, describes how he lost the majority of his possessions at the skedadle at Missionary Ridge. James, who may have been an artilleryman, also states that "if the Infantry had stood like the artillerymen the Yanks would never have come up on Missionary Ridge."

Abstract

In a December 3, 1863 letter from James to My Dear Sister Kate, a Confederate soldier describes his situation after participating in the Battle of Missionary Ridge in Chattanooga during the Civil War.

Biographical/Historical Note

No biographical information is known about the sender or recipient. The Battle of Missionary Ridge took place on November 25, 1863, in Chattanooga, Tenn., and resulted in a Confederate loss and withdrawal from the town.
