Biography / History

Starting in 1874, the Chautauqua movement brought entertainment, education, and culture to rural communities throughout America, prompting President Theodore Roosevelt to quip that it was "the most American thing in America." Independent Chautauquas operated in permanent locations, while Circuit or Tent Chautauquas - first developed by the Redpath Lyceum Bureau - toured the country. Each hosted lectures, music performances, religious instruction, and more, which aided its popularity when traveling to isolated communities. The height of the movement's popularity came in the 1920s, but by the 1940s, thanks to the availability of radio and automobiles, Circuit Chautauquas faded. There are, however, still several Independent Chautauquas operating today.
