Thomas Hughes was born on October 22, 1822 in Uffington, Berkshire, England. He attended Rugby School and Oxford, studying law and gaining admission to the bar in 1848. From 1865 to 1874 he was a Member of Parliament in the Liberal party. He considered himself a Christian Socialist and supported trade unions and women's suffrage. He was also a writer, best known for Tom Brown's Schooldays . In 1880 he founded Rugby, Tennessee, a utopian colony for English gentlemen. He died on March 22, 1896.
