Biography / History
Lewis Frelan Goddard was born to Carlyle J. and Elva E. Goddard in Proctor, Vermont, on May 9, 1924. He graduated from Central High School, Knoxville, Tennessee, in June 1943. After enlisting with the Signal Corps Enlisted Reservists, he entered active service at Camp Crowder, Missouri. Goddard volunteered for the Office of Strategic Service, and in December 1943, trained in England as a radio operator for a "Jedburgh" team as First Sergeant. On August 7, 1944, the team parachuted into central France, where they were killed. His body was moved several times, finally resting at the U.S. Military Rhone Cemetery in Draguignan, France.
