Biography / History

Malcolm Rice Patterson (1861-1935) and Edward Ward Carmack (1858-1908) were candidates for the Democratic nomination for governor of Tennessee in 1908. The campaign revolved around the issue of prohibition, which Carmack supported and Patterson opposed. Patterson narrowly won the primary and easily won the general election. Carmack was killed on November 9, 1908 in a shootout in Nashville with Robin Cooper, a former supporter of his who endorsed his opponent. His death led to an upsurge in support for prohibition, and the state legislature enacted a ban on liquor sales in January 1909.
