The 423rd Field Artillery Group was a unit of the US Army (5th Army, II Corps) that fought in Italy in 1944 and 1945.


Collection Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of a number of World War II-era aerial photographs of Bologna, Italy and surrounding areas, taken in March and April 1945 by the U.S. Army's 423rd Field Artillery Group. They show potential targets and the results of artillery shelling by American forces, including destroyed buildings and fields covered with craters. Some photographs are marked in red to show important targets, and notes on the back of some photographs indicate the units involved and whether or not important targets were hit. The shells were fired by the "985 FA BN" (Field Artillery Battalion), and the aerial observation conducted by the "423 FA GP AOP" (423rd Field Artillery Group Aerial Observation Post).
