Biography / History

The Musikalische 5 Cent Collection was a Knoxville-based society that issued monthly German-language songbooks at a cost of 5 cents apiece. According to the organization, these books provided "the cheapest, handiest, and best edition of choir and holy folk songs ... in addition to good instrumental music printed from new plates."

Tilghman Francis Haws was born to German immigrants Edward and Sarah (Sherer) Haws on May 7, 1834 in Northampton, Pennsylvania. He married Amelia Smith on June 17, 1873 and the couple had six children. Haws died on July 4, 1916 in Knoxville, Tennessee.
