Biography / History

Romulus Riggs (1782-1846) was a prominent merchant in Washington, D.C., and the uncle of George Washington Riggs, co-founder of Riggs National Bank, which PNC Bank acquired in 2005. In 1814, he was co-director of the Farmers & Mechanics Branch of Riggs in Georgetown, D. C., with George C. Washington. In 1872, the bank became the Farmers & Mechanics National Bank of Georgetown, and it merged with Riggs National Bank in 1928. Riggs also held great amounts of land in Illinois and, in fact, presented the first public bell from Americans in the state to the Vandalia Presbyterian Church in December 1830. His daughter Illinois (1826-1911) married Charles Henry Graff (1820-1878) on March 29, 1847.
