Biography / History

Barclay Martin was born in Edgefield District, South Carolina on December 17, 1802. His family moved to Bourbon County, Kentucky in 1804 and on to Bedford County, Tennessee in 1806. As an adult, he moved to Maury County, Tennessee and studied law. After passing the bar, he began working as an attorney and was elected to the Tennessee State Legislature on many different occasions. He was member of the Tennessee State House of Representatives in 1839 and 1840, 1847 to 1849, and 1851 to 1853. He served in the Tennessee State Senate from 1841 to 1843 and in the Twenty-Ninth United States Congress from March 4, 1845 to March 3, 1847. He died in Maury County, Tennessee on November 8, 1890.
