Biography / History

Joseph Stewart was born on April 24, 1827 in Salem Township, Ohio. He married Martha Emily Culver of New York on October 1, 1849 and the couple had eight children: Catherine Elizabeth (born 1850), Ella Louisa (born 1852), Emma Susan (born 1854), Franklin Amos (born 1857), Enos Watson (born 1859), Dayton Ellsworth (born 1862), Harvey Newton (born 1867), and Martha Lorena (born 1870). Since the family lived in both Indiana and Ohio during the Civil War, Stewart may have served with either an Indiana or an Ohio regiment. After the war, he returned home to his family, by then living in Columbiana County, Ohio. Martha Stewart died on March 12, 1871, and Joseph Stewart died on August 21, 1911.
