Biography / History

The 525th Tactical Fighter Squadron of the U.S. Air Force began on February 10, 1942 as the 309th Bombardment Squadron, and assigned to the 86th Bombardment Group. They departed for combat in April 1943, and first fought on July 6, 1943 on the island of Sicily. The name changed to the 525th Fighter-Bomber Squadron on August 23, 1943, as it set up in Italy, where the group fought at the Battles of Salerno and Cassino. The squadron moved to France and then Germany, where it left combat after May 8, 1945. After the war, the squadron continued to fly in Germany, then provided nuclear air-to-ground deliveries in the 1970s. During the Gulf War in 1991, the 525th operated in Iraq and provided supplies to Kurdish refugees. On April 1, 1992, the squadron was deactivated.

The preceding information came from the History of the 525th Fighter Squadron in Box 1, Folder 7 of this collection. It contains more in-depth information.
