Biography / History

The Ossoli Circle was the first women's club in Tennessee, formed on November 20, 1885, by Lizzie Crozier French (1851-1926), daughter of lawyer John H. Crozier. Intended to advance women's intellectual and moral development, it was named after intellectual and women's rights advocate Margaret Fuller Ossoli (1810-1850). From 1885 to 1890, the Tennessee Female Instituted served as home for the Circle and Mary B. Temple, daughter of Judge O.P. Temple, as president. The Circle called for delegates of the state's women's clubs to meet in Knoxville and organize the Tennessee Federation of Women's Clubs in 1896. It also accomplished the establishment of traveling libraries, aid to mountain schools, the improvement of Tennessee laws affecting women, and the establishment of a state vocational school for girls.
