Reed and Mulroy requested that the ladies send in their favorite recipes for a cookbook that would support their club "Hands Across America," which was an organization that focused on the contributions that senior citizens make to society.

Letters are written by 37 U.S. governors' wives from Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, California, Connecticut, Georgia, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. The collection includes letters from Nancy Reagan and Rosalynn Carter, who would later become First Ladies.
