Biography / History

Founded by Joshua William Caldwell in 1886, the Irving Club is a private literary group that meets every Monday between September and June to discuss literature and current events. Individual Irving Club members are assigned topics or literary works that they are then required to research and present to the rest of the group. A variety of well-known individuals from the University of Tennessee have participated in the Irving Club, including John C. Hodges, Andy Holt, William Bass, Alvin Nielson, and Calvin Buehler.
