Robert J. Leavens was born in 1915 in Pennsylvania. Prior to World War II, he worked as a photographer. He enlisted in the U.S. Army as a warrant officer in February of 1942 and served in the Pacific Theater.

Ex-CBI Roundup was a magazine for soldiers that served in the China, Burma, India Theater during WWII.
