Biography / History

George Tarres was born to Scottish immigrants William and Jane Dunlap Smith Tarres in Ohio in about 1842. There were four other children in the family: Rebecca (born about 1840), Margaret (born about 1843), Isabella (born about 1846), and William (born about 1848). In 1862, George Tarres joined Company E of the 102nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry. This unit served in Kentucky, Tennessee, and Alabama before being discharged at Nashville in 1865. After the war, Tarres returned to Richland County, Ohio, where he worked as a farmer until his death on August 18, 1923.


Collection Scope and Content Note

In this letter to his sister Rebecca (postmarked Clarksville, TN) George Tarres discusses the fighting and marching that his unit has done. He says that "we left Bowling Green but there is not many the first one is Russelvillie in ky and the allenville and the Clarksville Tenn and the down the river... last Friday we was called out into battle."
