Biography / History

Christopher Grigg was born to Burwell and Malinda O'Neill Grigg in North Carolina on April 13, 1822. He married Elizabeth S. (most likely Elizabeth Salley Beam), and the couple had at least four children: Agnes (born about 1847), Phillip (born about 1859), Caleb (born about 1852), and Mary (born about 1861). The family had moved to Alabama by 1860 and Christopher Grigg joined the 9th Alabama Cavalry when the Civil War began. He survived the war and returned to his family. He died sometime between 1880 and 1900.


Collection Scope and Content Note

In this letter to his wife, son, and daughter, Christopher Grigg speaks of it being his birthday and how of his company is close to the Yankee pickets. He also describes meeting a man who his mother went to school with. He says that this person "went to the same school my mother did when she was a girl. When he found Maldina Grigg was my mother he said give me you hand. I gave him my hand he took me home and gave me a good supper."
