Biography / History

Asa M. Weston was born to Asa and Thankful Robbins Weston on September 24, 1836 in Ohio. He enlisted in Company K of the 50th Ohio Volunteer Infantry as a Sergeant on August 11, 1862. He was promoted to Sergeant Major on March 4, 1865 and again to Second Lieutenant on April 22, 1865. After the war ended, Weston moved to Illinois and married Julia E. Pardee in about 1868. The couple had one child, Nell, born in about 1869. The family later lived in Pennsylvania and Indiana. Weston died on November 11, 1902.


Collection Scope and Content Note

In this letter to his sister, Asa M. Weston discusses being close to Knoxville and President Lincoln's call for more draftees. He also speaks of how honored he feels to fight in the war, saying "What a privilege to fight in such a blessed cause...The prospect for ending the war is glorious." . He also mentions religion, telling his sister that "I have been a firm believer in truth of divine revelation & of the religion of Jesus Christ."
