Biography / History

Ira Fayette Pettibone was born in Stockholm, New York, on March 24, 1824. He graduated from Union College in 1849 and from Andover Theological Seminary in 1854. In 1855, he began working as a missionary in Turkey, and was later sent to a number of other locations in Asia Minor. He returned to America in 1864, at which time he enlisted in the 74th Regiment of the Illinois Volunteers as a Chaplain. He mustered out on June 10, 1865 and returned to his religious work. He died on March 31, 1897 and was buried with his parents in Rockton, Illinois.


Collection Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of a report written by Chaplain Ira Fayette Pettibone, then serving with the 74th Regiment of the Illinois Volunteers, in Chattanooga on November 1, 1864. Addressing an unnamed General, Pettibone writes of his Unit's activities during October 1864. He describes a train accident (caused by a flood) that killed a surgeon and a private and injured several others and mentions troop movements at the Chickamauga Battlefield and at Lookout Mountain.
