Biography / History

Orlando Comstock Geer was born to Alexander Hamilton and Cordelia Comstock Geer on October 22, 1840 in Lucas County, Ohio. There were two other children in the family: Amos Wight (born September 24, 1843) and Harriet Cordelia (born October 22, 1847). When the Civil War broke out, Orlando Geer enlisted in the 14th Ohio Volunteer Infantry as a Corporal. This unit participated in the siege of Corinth, Miss., the Tullahoma Campaign, the occupation of Middle Tennessee, the Chickamauga Campaign, the Chattanooga-Ringgold Campaign, and the Atlanta Campaign. Geer was promoted to Sergeant on May 21, 1865 and mustered out on July 11, 1865. He returned to Lucas County after the war, where he lived until his death on February 9, 1927.

This collection contains a letter from Orlando Geer to his sister. Geer expresses his opinions about news from home and tells his sister about the condition of their mutual acquaintances in the army. At the time he wrote the letter, Geer was in camp near Nashville, Tennessee, shortly before the 14th Ohio's march to Savannah, Tennessee, and participation in the Siege of Corinth, Mississippi.
