Biography / History

African American spiritual choirs became popular in the years following the Civil War. The choirs were often composed of former slaves or their children, and they traveled the states singing hymns. Many of these hymns had been sung on plantations for decades, but were published by white men.


Collection Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of sheet music sung by the Nashville Students Choir. The compilation is credited to their conductor H. B. Thearle and is dated 1884.
