Biography / History
Marion Bennett of Switz City, Indiana served in Company D of the 59th Regiment of the Indiana Infantry during the Civil War. He entered the infantry as a private, and he was promoted to the rank of sergeant before being discharged. Marion Bennett was born in 1846, and he married Sarah Ellen Bland in 1866. After the Civil War, Marion Bennett became the Assistant Secretary of the 59th Indiana Infantry reunion organization.
Collection Scope and Content Note
This collection consists of a ledger written by Marion Bennett between 1917 and 1925. He provides a written account of the history of the 59th Indiana Infantry during the Civil War. The document is type written, and it contains a history of the regiment from its inception in 1861 to the end of the war in 1865. Bennett included his own discharge papers and newspaper clippings describing President Lincoln's participation in the war, his assassination, and the capture of John Wilkes Booth.
In the ledger, Bennett provides descriptions of Civil War battles in which the 59th Indiana Infantry participated. He describes the regiment's travel down the Mississippi River through New Madrid, Corinth, Moscow, Memphis, and ending with the siege at Vicksburg. Bennett also describes the Atlanta campaign, Sherman's March to the Sea, and the regiment's movement through the Civil War battle sites of Chattanooga, Mission Ridge, Huntsville, Savannah, Columbia, and Port Royal. He provides transcriptions fo Sherman's farewell address to his army from May 30, 1865, the number of miles traveled by various corps, and a brief history of the Army of the Tennessee.
The ledger also contains minutes from the 59th Indiana Infantry's reunion meetings and death records of its members from 1917 to 1925. A newspaper clipping from 1925 is the last entry in the ledger, and it provides a listing of all the surviving members of the 59th Indiana Infantry.
Additionally, the collection includes a double ambrotype portrait of Marion Bennett and his wife Sarah.
