Biography / History

Isham Talbot Peck, his wife Emma E. Peck, and family resided in both Oakland, Tennessee and Lake City, Florida. Their children were William, Charles, Edward, Ashby, Louis, Ada, and Paul. Ada died at age five in 1859. The Peck family also had relatives living in southern Louisiana and Mississippi.

D.W. Allen, his wife Maggie, and family resided in Wolf Creek, Tennessee. Their children were Emma, Helen, Louise, Nellie, and Harry. The relationship between the Pecks and Allens cannot be determined. Harry Allen became a telegraph operator and worked in South Carolina, Texas, Georgia, and Gainesville, Daytona, and Jacksonville, Florida. Harry's aunt Mary Heiss lived in Nashville, and his friend Jean Comfort lived in Knoxville.

Collection Scope and Content Note

The Peck and Allen Family Papers consist primarily of correspondence and one journal from 1853 to 1903. The Peck and Allen family members correspond to and from Wolf Creek and Oakland, Tennessee and Florida. The letters and journal include writings about traveling to Georgia, Louisiana, Virginia, North Carolina, and Tennessee cities such as Knoxville, Nashville, Memphis, Loudon, and Kingsport. The journal also includes descriptions of the "Chimnies" and "Paint Rock " in the Great Smoky Mountains. The correspondence refers to several females with the name Emma, and it is difficult to distinguish which Emma the letters refer to.

Emma E. Peck writes about the distress in Louisiana after the Civil War with the "negroes" dying of cholera and everybody wanting "to leave that dreadful country." One letter by Emma E. Peck discusses the progress of the Civil War, but she predominantly writes about her family and children

Harry Heiss Allen writes about his experiences as a telegraph operator during the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century. Working for Western Union in Florida, he writes about the introduction of electric clocks into the dispatcher's office. He also writes of a big fire that engulfed Jacksonville and of a priest's assassination.
