These documents primarily concern civil engineering topics and are by Bill Davis, TVA, Impact Tools, Inc., etc. There are also patents, blueprints, tool designs, etc., which relate to Bill's father Lewis K. Davis of Impact Tools, Inc.

Biography / History

Frederick Augustus William "Bill" Davis (1893-?) graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M. I. T.) in 1915 with a bachelor's of science in civil engineering. He moved to Knoxville and Norris, TN, where Davis worked at the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) from the 1920s onward. At TVA, he was an assistant mining engineer for the Minerals Testing Laboratory. Bill's father was Lewis Ketchum Davis, vice president of Impact Tools, Inc., in New York City, NY, and Hampton, NJ.


Collection Scope and Content Note

This collection contains the papers of F. A. W. "Bill" Davis, who worked for the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). Spanning the first half of the 20th century (but mainly from the 1930s), papers include correspondence, photographs, blueprints, publications and a few pieces of fabric. These documents primarily concern civil engineering topics and are by Bill Davis, TVA, Impact Tools, Inc., or others. There are also patents, blueprints, tool designs, etc., which relate to Bill's father Lewis K. Davis, inventor and vice president of Impact Tools, Inc.

N. B. Collection contains negatives and glass as well as some dirty papers and fabric, so researchers are advised to wear gloves. Also, Oversized Box 4 contains deteriorated negatives of mechanical parts. Researchers should take note that these have a strong vinegar smell.
