Biography / History

The training of future pilots had already begun on the campus in 1940, under the provisions of the Civilian Training Pilot Act of 1939, and this continued under the administration of the College of Engineering. Students were given both ground and flight training in an "accelerated victory program" designed to train students for wartime service.


Collection Scope and Content Note

This collection consist of photographs, booklets, and other materials collected from the University of Tennessee Institute of Aviation during 1943 and 1944. There are eight issues of "Air Scoop," the Air Force cadet newspaper, two issues of "Vol Plane," the Cadet Training Detachment (CTD) information booklet, one copy of Air Force special orders #14, and several photographs documenting student life. In folder 6 there is a VHS tape entitled Our Life and Time in Knoxville, Tn. The cassestte was made by Joe Koch, a former U.T. Knoxville air force cadet.
