Biography / History

During the Great Depression, Clarence Bates (1906-1988) served as a field agent for the Agricultural Adjustment Administration, an off shoot of the United States Department of Agricultural. The USDA played a crucial role in the Great Depression providing assistance, ensuring food production, assisting small farmers with loans, and continuing the education of rural youth. As part of the New Deal, the Agricultural Adjustment Act (AAA) payed farmers to reduce their crop area in order to raise crop value and renew agricultural stability.
