Abstract:
This letter dated September 17, 1863, was written by Robert Neville, a Union solider and a Corporal in the 103rd Regiment, Ohio Infantry. The letter was written to his wife Mary from Knoxville, Tennessee. He writes of his well being and the reception of the Union soldiers by people in the region - "truly loyal people and whose enthusiasm was unbounded almost fanatically at the sight of The Yankees as they call up such joy I never saw in my life."

Biography / History

Robert Neville, from Ohio, was a Corporal in the 103rd Regiment, Ohio Infantry. The regiment was organized in Cleveland, Ohio, August, 1862, mustered out June 12, 1865. During September 1863 the regiment was in Knoxville, Tennessee.


Collection Scope and Content Note

The collection contains a letter dated September 17, 1863, written from Knoxville, Tennessee. The letter is written by Robert Neville to his wife Mary in Ohio. He writes of his state of mind. He states that "your dear husband has been well very well cheerful contented and happy through our march over the mountains." He also states that they were well received on their march by the "truly loyal people and whose enthusiasm was unbounded almost fanatically at the sight of The Yankees as they call up such joy I never saw in my life."
